Filing Guides

File your federal return — clearly explained.

Choose your situation, gather the documents, file the right forms. These guides mirror the IRS instructions and route you directly to the official source.

What you'll need

• Photo ID and SSN/ITIN for everyone on the return • Prior year AGI (to e-file) • W-2s, 1099s, and any K-1s • Bank routing & account for direct deposit • Receipts for deductions you'll itemize • Health coverage information

Choosing the right form

Most individuals file Form 1040. Self-employed taxpayers add Schedule C. Rental income adds Schedule E. Investment income adds Schedule D. Itemized deductions go on Schedule A. We handle every schedule for you if you'd rather not.

E-file vs. paper

E-file with direct deposit returns refunds in ~21 days. Paper returns can take 6+ weeks. Always e-file when possible — the IRS officially recommends it.

By taxpayer type

First-time filer

Start with the IRS Free File program if your AGI is under the annual threshold.

Self-employed

Schedule C + Schedule SE are required. Pay quarterly estimated taxes to avoid penalties.

Married filing jointly

Combine income, withholding, and deductions on one return. Usually the lowest tax.

Head of household

Unmarried + supports a qualifying person. Lower rates than single filing.
