Refund Tracking

Where's my refund?

The IRS updates Where's My Refund once per day, usually overnight. You'll need your SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount.

Expected timing

E-file + direct deposit: typically 21 days from acceptance. Paper return: 6–8 weeks or more. Amended return (Form 1040-X): up to 20 weeks.

Why your refund may be delayed

• Returns claiming EITC or Additional CTC can't be issued before mid-February (PATH Act). • Identity verification (Letter 5071C / 4883C). • Math errors or mismatched W-2/1099 data. • Past-due federal debts (offsets).

If it's been more than 21 days

Sign in to your IRS online account to see refund status and any notices. If Where's My Refund tells you to call, use the number on that page — it routes to a refund specialist.
